British-Canadian scientist Geoffrey Hinton, widely credited as the father of artificial intelligence, warned of the potential dangers of AI and advocated further research, just hours after being announced as a co-winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics.
He shares the prize with U.S. scientist John Hopfield for discoveries and inventions in machine learning that paved the way for the AI boom.
Hinton said that he has high hopes for AI's role in productivity, particularly in the healthcare industry. However, he warned that researchers need to find ways to put safeguards on AI. He said that the industry does not yet know how to avoid catastrophic scenarios. He said that scientists believe that AI will become smarter than humans in the next 20 years.
Hopfield, 91, a professor emeritus at Princeton University, created an associative memory that can store and reconstruct images and other types of patterns in data, said the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
