Google on Tuesday revealed it will purchase power from small modular reactor developer Kairos Power.

The tech giant backed the emerging nuclear technology company which will build its first small modular reactor by the end of the decade - and as many as seven within 10 years.

Google will take the electricity from these reactors to power its data centres, which are dramatically increasing their energy demands with artificial intelligence and cloud computing.

Kairos uses a molten fluoride salt as a coolant in the nuclear process, not water and has been given the first permit in 50 years to build a new type of reactor in America.
