NotebookLM, which is free to use, is one of the first viral hits for Google’s many efforts to turn its Gemini AI into practical products that help normal people. With very little effort on your part, it takes up to 50 documents and turns them into a personal “notebook” knowledge base. You can read its summary of your material, ask it questions like a chatbot or, most creatively, make a podcast.

This is a fundamentally different experience than asking ChatGPT questions about the world. “It’s like if you could talk with your notebook,” says Raiza Martin, the Google product manager for NotebookLM, in an interview.
