The benefits and risks of artificial intelligence are hot button issues. We examined the views of two key groups: the American public and AI experts.

For this project, we defined “AI experts” as individuals living in the U.S. who demonstrate expertise via their work or research in artificial intelligence or related fields. Refer to the report for a full explanation of the methodology.

Experts are more likely than the general public to see AI as personally beneficial:
- 76% of experts say AI is more likely to benefit them, 15% say it’s more likely to harm them, 9% are unsure
- 24% of the general public say benefit, 43% say harm, 33% say they’re unsure

AI experts and the public do have similar views when it comes to AI regulation. Both experts (56%) and the public (58%) are more concerned that the U.S. government will not go far enough in regulating AI, versus going too far (28% and 21%, respectively). 16% of experts and 21% of the public aren’t sure.
