As a high school teacher, I’ve noticed two main things that get on my nerves. First, students rarely pay attention to instructions. I’ll write everything clearly on the assignment sheet, even read it aloud, and still hear, “So what are we doing now?”

But the bigger issue? Kids using AI to cheat on essays. I can usually tell when a piece is AI-generated, but if I confront them, they act shocked and deny it. Normally, I just give them a zero, but I worry that one of them might call the administration on me, and without solid proof, they might get away with it.

So, I came up with a little test. I assigned a creative writing task, giving simple instructions: "Write a story about anything." Then, I added a sneaky line in smaller print: If your main character's name is Zara, you’ll get 0 points.

Why? Because ChatGPT-2 often generates stories about a girl named Zara in a mystical forest. She was known throughout the village for her curiosity and sense of adventure. Sure enough, a few students handed in tales featuring "Zara," and I graded them with a straight 0.

When they inevitably asked why, I simply pointed to the instructions they hadn't read. No need to mention AI. We both knew exactly what had happened.
