Sir Keir Starmer has failed to say if Rachel Reeves will still be Chancellor at the next general election.

Ms Reeves is under mounting pressure over the state of the economy and public finances amid an intensifying sell-off in government bonds.

Sir Keir was asked after delivering a speech on artificial intelligence this morning “yes or no” if Ms Reeves would still be in her role at the next election.

He dodged the question and said: “We are going to stick to the fiscal rules, that is a very important thing that we have said throughout. We set out those fiscal rules very early on in the day because we knew that the missing ingredient in recent years has been economic stability.
