In the 1980s, a young Einstein fan with a passion for science had a dream: to create an artificial scientist who could solve the mysteries of the universe. At the time, everyone thought he was crazy. He was the German computer scientist Jürgen Schmidhuber, who is now considered ‘the father’ of modern artificial intelligence. He explains: ‘In the 1990s, we already started the research that led to the development of AI, but at that time nobody was interested in the subject. However, the algorithms that he and his team developed in those years ‘are now in our mobile phones, in translators, in Chat GPT and in countless applications that are part of our daily lives in the 21st century,’ he adds.

His work has been recognised internationally and he is considered one of the pioneers of deep learning. He is also the creator of so-called ‘artificial neural networks’ and a strong advocate of the ‘artificial general intelligence’ (AGI) approach, seeking to create systems that can learn and reason in a similar way to humans. In the face of current misgivings and fears about AI, Schmidhuber defends its applications in the field of medicine, language or the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including climate change: ‘If used correctly, artificial intelligence can help prevent environmental disasters such as droughts and floods, improve global problems such as air quality and, in the field of medicine, help us prevent and detect diseases such as cancer or cardiovascular disease,’ he explains. For Jürgen Schmidhuber, the AI of the future will be able to solve problems for the benefit of humanity as a whole, and he says that what we are seeing now will be nothing compared to what will happen in 30 years' time: ’So what is happening is not just another Industrial Revolution. It is something that is going to go beyond civilisation and humanity as we know it,’ he concludes.
