So, short answer...
No, I don’t believe that A.I. will ever be able to replace performers. Of course, as a performer, I’m biased, but I’d like to think that even if I weren’t a concert guitarist my opinion wouldn’t change. There is something incredibly spiritual and unique about a live performance that can only be reproduced by a human being. Without meaning to sound too cheesy, but there’s a reason why musicians are passionate about their art, and it goes beyond technical ability: it has to do with the concept of “soufulness.”
I like to think that an audience can tell when a performer doesn’t put their heart and soul into their performances. In my own experience, as an audience member, I can definitely tell when a performer isn’t emotionally invested in what they’re communicating. Furthermore, how can A.I. ever deliver that emotionality, which is so inherent to our humanity?
Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean that A.I. isn’t useful to us. There are so many ways that A.I. is intervening in the music industry, not just by creating a new Beatles song or completing Beethoven’s 10th symphony, but also by providing new didactic methods that will make learning music more accessible to more people.
